GUTsy Captain Kombucha

The company started life as Captain Kombucha before rebranding to GUTsy Captain in 2019. That name change came alongside an expanded range, adding water kefir to the lineup. The rebrand reflected a broader mission around gut health rather than just one product.

Production happens at their Portuguese facility, one of Europe's largest dedicated kombucha operations. They grow their own SCOBY cultures in-house and use organic ingredients throughout. The fermentation follows traditional methods using green tea and organic raw cane sugar, resulting in a lightly carbonated drink with live bacteria cultures.

The kombucha range spans several flavours. Original delivers the classic tangy green tea taste. California Raspberry adds fruit sweetness without overwhelming the fermented character. Coconut Summer Beach goes tropical. There's also a Zero line for those watching sugar intake, using the same fermentation process but ending up with no sugar or calories.

Water kefir joined the range as a dairy-free alternative. Fermented with water kefir grains rather than a SCOBY, it offers a different flavour profile. The Original keeps things simple while Raspberry adds fruit brightness.

GUTsy Captain has grown into Europe's top-selling kombucha brand, now available in over 35 countries. In the UK, you'll find it at Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Holland & Barrett, as well as through their own online shop. The 400ml bottles and 1-litre formats fit both grab-and-go and home fridge needs. Organic credentials and mainstream distribution at supermarket prices puts it at the more accessible end of the category.
