Mikkeller changed how the world thinks about craft beer. Founded in 2006 by physics teacher Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and journalist Kristian Keller, the Copenhagen company pioneered the gypsy brewing model, creating recipes and having them produced at partner breweries rather than owning their own facility. It was a radical idea that let them experiment wildly without the capital constraints of running a physical brewery.

The brand became synonymous with boundary-pushing craft beer. Barrel-aged stouts, spontaneous fermentation, collaborations with breweries worldwide. By the time many drinkers discovered craft beer, Mikkeller was already shaping what the category could become.

Their alcohol-free work deserves particular attention. Mikkeller spent three years with Belgian collaborator De Proefbrouwerij developing a proprietary yeast strain called mikkellensis specifically for non-alcoholic brewing. The result is beer with genuine complexity rather than the flavour-stripped character of typical dealcoholised products. Passion fruit notes, funky undertones, proper depth.

Drink'in the Sun remains their flagship AF offering, a refreshing wheat ale built for summer sessions. Henry and the Science showcases their Flemish Primitive approach with that distinctive mikkellensis character. The range extends to hoppy options and seasonals, all brewed with the same experimental spirit as their full-strength catalogue.

Mikkeller runs the Running Club, connecting beer enthusiasts and athletes worldwide. It's a natural fit. Their alcohol-free beers were developed partly with active lifestyles in mind, offering something genuinely drinkable after exercise rather than just acceptable.

Mikkeller bars in Copenhagen give the AF range proper shelf space alongside the full-strength catalogue. In the UK, specialist retailers stock the alcohol-free options. The brand's restless approach to brewing doesn't stop at 0.5%.
