Athletic Brewing started with a familiar frustration. Bill Shufelt was at a beer garden with colleagues in the mid-2010s and wanted something other than alcohol. The options were dismal. A former hedge fund analyst, Shufelt saw a gap in the market and decided to fill it.

He needed someone who could actually brew. John Walker, a brewer working in New Mexico, answered an intriguing job ad that mentioned "the most innovative sector in craft" without specifying what that meant. When Walker discovered it was non-alcoholic beer, he was curious enough to take the meeting. The two Connecticut natives hit it off, and in 2017 Walker moved his family across the country to join the venture.

Their early days were scrappy. The pilot brewing system arrived at a warehouse with no utilities, no floor drains, no water hookups. They spent months homebrewing in Gatorade jugs, working through batch after batch until they cracked the code on flavour. Walker's brewing talent proved essential. By 2018, they had something worth selling.

Athletic's approach differs from most NA beer producers. Rather than brewing regular beer and stripping out the alcohol, they developed proprietary methods to create full-flavoured beer without the alcohol in the first place. The result tastes like craft beer because it is craft beer, just without the booze.

The range covers serious ground. Run Wild IPA delivers the hop character you'd expect from a session ale. Free Wave goes bigger with hazy, tropical notes. Upside Dawn offers a clean golden ale for those wanting something lighter. Seasonal releases and limited editions keep the lineup fresh, often pushing into styles that seemed impossible for NA brewing just a few years ago.

Athletic positioned themselves around active lifestyles from day one. The name was deliberate: positive, aspirational, and not tied to any particular region. Their "Two for the Trails" initiative channels money toward trail restoration, appealing to the runners, cyclists and hikers who make up much of their customer base.

The company has earned recognition at international beer competitions, notably winning top honours at events where their entries competed blind against full-strength beers. That kind of result matters. It proved NA craft beer could genuinely compete on taste.

Based in Milford, Connecticut, Athletic has grown into the largest brewery focused exclusively on non-alcoholic beer. Products are widely available across the United States in grocery stores, and they ship direct from their website. A membership programme offers exclusive releases for regulars. The category looks different because of what they built.
