Glen Dochus
Glen Dochus started with a dad trying to prove his son wrong. Roddy Nicoll, a serial entrepreneur with a background in confectionery and soft drinks, was asked by his son why he drank gin and tonics. When Roddy said he liked the taste, his son challenged him: you like it for the alcohol. That sparked an idea. Roddy set out to make spirits without alcohol, and in 2018 he and his younger brother Kerr launched Spirits of Virtue from their backyard in rural Scotland.
Glen Dochus is the brothers' take on Scotch whisky. The name means 'valley of hope' in Gaelic, which captures their ambition: premium alcohol-free spirits that can stand alongside their boozy counterparts. All products are naturally distilled rather than dealcoholised, which means they're certified Halal and can reach markets across the Middle East and Asia that traditional whisky alternatives cannot.
The water comes from Royal Deeside in the Cairngorms, filtered through granite over decades before it reaches the distillery. Spirits of Virtue holds exclusive rights to this source. Combined with barrel elicitation, malt and barley flavours, and botanical extracts, they produce five distinct blends.
West Coast delivers smooth, mellow notes with candied fruit and cracked black pepper. Highland brings heather honey, figs, and warming spices. Export offers cinnamon and toffee with a gingerbread edge. Royale combines roasted hazelnut, vanilla, and honeycomb. Island goes full peat smoke with liquorice, chocolate, and black pepper. Each captures a different whisky tradition without the alcohol.
Spirits of Virtue has grown from backyard beginnings to a company with 20 employees exporting to 17 countries. Glen Dochus sits alongside their other brands covering gin, vodka, bourbon, and rum alternatives. The brothers' strategy of building multiple premium brands under one roof positions them as something of a non-alcoholic Diageo.
You can find Glen Dochus through specialist AF retailers like Threshers, Drinks Direct, and The Sobr Market, as well as Amazon UK. In a category where many whisky alternatives lean heavily on smoke as a shortcut, the range of five distinct regional styles is a genuine point of difference.
