Three German brothers, a whim, and a plot of land near Christchurch. That's how Giesen started in 1981, when Theo and Alex purchased what was then the most southerly vineyard in the world. Marcel joined after completing winemaking school, and by 1984 they had bottled their first vintage.

The brothers came from winemaking stock. Their grandfather August was a sommelier and restaurateur, and they understood that cool climates produce wines with genuine character. New Zealand's South Island reminded them of home, and they were right to trust that instinct. Giesen is now one of New Zealand's top ten wineries, distributed across more than thirty countries.

Their alcohol-free range launched as a natural extension of four decades making Marlborough wines. The 0% Sauvignon Blanc was New Zealand's first dealcoholised Sauvignon, and the range has grown to include Riesling, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Merlot, Chardonnay, and a Sparkling Brut.

Giesen uses spinning cone technology to separate alcohol from finished wine while preserving aromatics. The process splits the wine into three components: alcohol, aroma, and body. They discard the alcohol, recombine the rest, and add a touch of grape juice to balance the final blend. The result sits at 0.5% ABV or below.

The Sauvignon Blanc delivers what you'd expect from Marlborough: citrus, passionfruit, and that distinctive grassy character. The Riesling carries lime and elderflower notes. For reds, their Merlot offers crushed berries and subtle oak tannins. The range has picked up recognition at international competitions, with several varietals earning medals.

You'll find Giesen 0% in major retailers across the UK, US, and beyond. In the UK, Waitrose and Sainsbury's stock the range. They also sell direct from their website. Four decades of New Zealand winemaking sits behind each bottle, which puts Giesen in a different position to most AF wine brands.
