Brulo
James Brown founded Brulo in Edinburgh in 2019 with a clear purpose: make alcohol-free beer good enough that you would choose it over the alternative. Brown, who also founded the Beer52 subscription service, knew what proper craft beer should taste like. He set out to prove that going alcohol-free meant gaining something, not giving it up.
Brulo operates on an asset-light model. Rather than building their own brewery, they work with De Proefbrouwerij in Belgium, a facility known for technical excellence and flexibility. This approach lets them focus on recipe development and innovation rather than equipment maintenance. Each batch gets brewed from scratch as a low-alcohol beer, not dealcoholised from a stronger original.
The range leans heavily into hop-forward styles. Lust For Life, their flagship DDH IPA, delivers tropical fruit and pine with enough bitterness to keep things interesting. King For A Day takes the hazy NEIPA approach, softer and juicier. Highway to Helles offers a clean, crisp lager for those after something lighter. Cascadian Tides brings dark roasted notes in stout form. They experiment too, with limited releases and seasonal brews keeping the lineup fresh.
The branding stands out. That wide-open eye logo, designed by James Ockelford and inspired by 1960s Japanese poster art, represents being awake and present. It is a clever visual shorthand for the sober drinking experience they are selling.
Brulo has attracted serious backing. Funkin founder Alex Carlton and Beavertown founder Logan Plant both invested in a recent funding round, a level of industry credibility that is hard to dismiss. The company claims profitability since launch, an unusual achievement in the drinks startup world. They are pushing for UK supermarket listings to complement their direct sales and specialist retailer presence.
You can order from their website for UK delivery, or find them through online specialists like Dry Drinker and independent bottle shops. International distribution covers the Netherlands and Japan. The craft credentials are genuine, which puts Brulo at the more serious end of the UK alcohol-free beer market.
