Heaps Normal
Heaps Normal launched in July 2020 with a simple premise: Australian drinking culture could use some better options. Founded by Andy Miller, Ben Holdstock, Peter Brennan and pro surfer Jordy Smith, the Sydney-based brewery makes exclusively alcohol-free beer. Each founder had their own reason to drink more mindfully. Rather than preach about it, they built a brand that celebrates good times without the hangover.
The timing proved sharp. When Heaps Normal arrived, the non-alcoholic selection in Australian bars was thin at best. They saw an opportunity to bring craft brewing credentials to a category that had been dominated by watery afterthoughts. Their approach worked. The Quiet XPA became a breakout hit, delivering tropical and citrus character with a proper beer finish, picking up awards including recognition at the World Beer Awards.
The range has grown to cover multiple styles. Half Day Hazy brings juicy, tropical notes in a hazy pale ale format. Another Lager offers a clean, crisp option for those who prefer something more traditional. Third IPA adds hop-forward intensity to the lineup. Fling Fresh Orange Sour takes things in a more experimental direction, pairing citrus brightness with tart acidity.
Beyond the beer, Heaps Normal runs a record label supporting Australian musicians and has built a community programme connecting like-minded drinkers. They hold B Corp certification and donate through 1% for the Planet, backing up the purpose-driven talk with actual commitments.
The brand found something in the Australian market that bigger breweries had missed. Their beers are now in bottle shops, bars and supermarkets across Australia, with growing availability in the UK and other markets.
