Big Drop Brewing
Rob Fink was a City lawyer with a new baby and a problem. Taking a break from alcohol in 2016, he discovered that alcohol-free beer options ranged from disappointing to dire. Rather than accept that reality, he called up his school friend James Kindred, a designer and entrepreneur he'd known since their Ipswich childhood. Together they decided to build something better.
Big Drop Brewing Co. launched in October 2016 as one of the first breweries in the world dedicated exclusively to alcohol-free beer. The founders brought in Johnny Clayton, an experimental brewer with a reputation for pushing boundaries, to develop their approach. Instead of brewing regular beer and stripping out the alcohol, Big Drop designed recipes from scratch to work at 0.5% ABV or below. The method relies on using less grain and selecting yeast strains that produce less alcohol during fermentation. The result is beer that tastes intentional rather than diminished.
The range demonstrates serious craft ambitions. Their Milk Stout, one of the original releases, pours dark with flavours of chocolate and honeycomb. The Pale Ale delivers citrus hop character with enough body to feel like actual beer. Rotating IPAs showcase different hop varieties, while lagers and wheat beers round out a lineup that covers most of what craft drinkers might want. Big Drop uses over twenty specialty grains across the range, including rye, wheat and oats alongside barley.
Big Drop operates as a contract brewer, working with partner breweries rather than owning production facilities. This asset-light model has allowed rapid expansion. The beers now sell in around twenty countries, with distribution spanning supermarkets, specialist retailers, and an online shop shipping direct to customers.
The brewery has built a strong reputation through blind tastings and competitions, regularly winning recognition against full-strength entries. That credibility matters. It helped establish that dedicated alcohol-free breweries could produce genuinely good beer, not just acceptable substitutes.
The founders still live in Ipswich with their families, running a business that grew from personal frustration into a category leader. Big Drop is widely available in UK supermarkets including Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, as well as pubs and restaurants that take their alcohol-free selection seriously. Worth starting with the flagship Stout, then working through the seasonals.
