Le Chauffeur
An alcohol-free IPA from Brauhaus Nittenau, cold-hopped with five varieties including Simcoe, Mosaic, and Citra over a Munich and caramel malt backbone. Won gold at the European Beer Star 2019.
About This Drink
Le Chauffeur was one of the first alcohol-free IPAs brewed in Germany, and it took gold in the Non-Alcoholic Ale category at the European Beer Star 2019. The hop bill, applied cold rather than in the boil, includes Simcoe, Chinook, Mosaic, Citra, and Callista, which together give the beer the aroma intensity that an IPA needs to feel like an IPA rather than a faint approximation. It pours copper with garnet edges and a creamy beige head. The nose is immediately hop-forward: tropical fruit, citrus peel, and pine resin, with a light floral note. The malt build uses Munich and Pilsner base malts alongside Caramel Palisander and a small addition of Carafa Special Type III, adding structure, caramel sweetness, and a hint of roast that gives depth without turning it dark. On the palate, peach, passion fruit, and grapefruit pith run alongside a lychee-like delicacy. The bitterness is real at 45 IBU: dry and lingering, with citrus peel running through to the end. At 0.5% and without dealcoholisation, it holds its body and does not collapse into sweetness.
