Nittenauer
Brauhaus Nittenau traces its roots to 1762 in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. For centuries, it operated as a traditional German brewery. Then in 2016, everything changed. A new process for producing non-alcoholic beer gave the brewery a major boost, and they've since built a reputation for some of Germany's best craft alcohol-free options.
Their approach uses a special yeast that cannot ferment malt sugar, producing beer with genuine body and complexity rather than the thin, watery character of typical dealcoholised products. The flavour development happens naturally during brewing rather than being salvaged afterwards.
The range showcases proper variety. The Wit reimagines Belgian witbier for the alcohol-free world, with Curacao orange peel and crushed coriander seeds added during boiling. Le Chauffeur is a non-alcoholic IPA brewed with Simcoe and Mosaic hops, delivering fruity aromatics and pleasant bitterness. Freie Liebe, meaning Free Love, tackles the lager style using Pilsner and Vienna malts with Sultana and Lotus hops for subtle fruitiness. The Coffee Porter combines roasted malts with Arabica beans from a local Regensburg roastery, blending chocolate notes with genuine coffee character.
A nine-beer alcohol-free set lets you explore the full range. It's proper craft brewing applied thoughtfully to the AF category rather than an afterthought to please the designated driver.
In the UK, Nittenauer appears through specialist German beer importers and online AF retailers like Beyond Beer. It's a small Bavarian brewery that's found a genuine second act in the alcohol-free space, and the range is broader and more interesting than most drinkers will expect.
