Blood Orange Aperitif
A South African take on the Italian bitter aperitif, using African Wormwood and Cinchona bark in place of alpine herbs, with blood orange doing the heavy lifting.

Abstinence produces this through hydro-distillation, pulling the flavour from both South African botanicals and more classic Italian aperitif ingredients. African Wormwood handles the bitterness you'd usually get from the traditional alpine herb blend in Campari-style drinks. Cinchona bark adds quinine depth. Blood orange does exactly what you'd expect it to: it's vivid and fresh, and it carries the whole thing. The nose is bright and immediately citrusy, with allspice and clove warming things up beneath. On the palate, a brief sweetness gives way to earthy bitterness from the wormwood mid-palate, and the finish keeps going with that bittersweet citrus-herb interplay. It has real length. Over ice with soda or tonic is the obvious serve, with a blood orange slice. It also works as a straight swap for Campari in a spritz or negroni-style build, proportions and all.
