ANON's Bittersweet Aperitif is the core bottle in the range and the one that turns up most often as an ingredient in their other products. It's built around a botanical blend of wormwood, vermouth-style notes, orange, gentian and quassia extracts, positioned as a direct stand-in for Aperol or Campari in long drinks and simple cocktails. It pours a warm amber with a reddish tinge. The nose is herbal and citrus-forward, dried orange peel with a quinine-like bitterness and soft floral notes sitting underneath. On the palate, sweetness arrives first then gives ground to a pleasant bitterness, with orange zest and gentle herbaceous character carrying through to a cooling finish. It's not a thin or watery experience, there's a light syrupy body to it. The sugar content is on the higher side, which rounds out the bitter edge and makes it more approachable than some of the drier alternatives. Over ice in a large wine glass topped with tonic or soda, garnished with orange, it does what a spritz is supposed to do. It also works as the bitter component in an alcohol-free Negroni.
