The pair founded Abstinence in 2020 after experiencing the familiar frustration of alcohol-free drinkers everywhere: wanting something sophisticated in social settings that went beyond soft drinks. Their backgrounds in wine and spirits meant they understood flavour complexity. Their location gave them access to botanicals most distillers could only dream of.

Buchu, a native flowering plant with intense blackcurrant notes, became a signature ingredient. African wormwood from the Cederberg Mountains adds earthy depth. Honeybush brings warmth. Rose geranium provides floral lift. These Cape botanicals run through the entire range, giving Abstinence a distinctive character that sets it apart from European-style alcohol-free spirits.

The core Cape series covers the spectrum of spirit styles. Cape Citrus works as a gin alternative, bright and juniper-forward with citrus peel notes.
