Lowlander emerged from the botanical room of a gin distillery. Founder Frederik Kampman spent years working in breweries and distilleries across Europe before launching Lowlander Beer Co in Amsterdam on New Year's Day 2016. His time developing gins sparked an idea: what if those same botanical ingredients could transform beer?

The concept connects to Dutch trading history. As merchants sailed home from Asia and the Americas, their ships carried spices that eventually found their way into local brewing. Lowlander revives that tradition, using herbs, fruits and botanicals to create beers with distinctive character.

Their alcohol-free range applies this botanical philosophy without compromise. The 0.00% Wit brings classic wheat beer refreshment with a herbal twist. The Mango IPA balances tropical fruit against hop bitterness at just 0.3% ABV. Seasonal releases like the Pumpkin Weizen and Winter IPA show they're not treating the AF range as an afterthought. A Ginger Beer, Tropical Ale and Citrus Blonde round out the collection.

What makes Lowlander interesting is their refusal to strip flavour when removing alcohol. Rather than producing thin approximations of their full-strength beers, they've built recipes where botanicals carry the complexity. The ginger, citrus, mango and spice notes do heavy lifting that alcohol would normally provide.

The company operates a bar and restaurant in Amsterdam-Noord alongside their brewing operations. They achieved carbon neutrality in 2022 and run environmental initiatives including seagrass restoration. It's a sustainability focus that feels genuine rather than performative.

In the UK, you'll find Lowlander through specialist AF retailers like Dry Drinker and The Alcohol Free Co. A good pick if you're bored of the lagers and pale ales that dominate most AF shelves.
