Northern Monk emerged from Holbeck, Leeds, in 2014, the industrial heart of a city that once powered the world. The name references the monastic brewing tradition practiced across Northern England for centuries. What started as a 10-barrel plant in a Grade II-listed mill has expanded repeatedly: a larger second site with canning line in 2017, the former Leeds Brewery premises in 2019, and a new 50-hectolitre brewkit in 2021.

The brewery has become synonymous with modern British craft beer. Hazy pale ales, punchy IPAs, inventive collaborations. Their core Faith pale ale established the house style: approachable, flavourful, unmistakably Northern Monk.

Holy Faith is its alcohol-free sibling, and it's something special. In 2022, it became the first alcohol-free beer ever to win three stars at the Great Taste Awards. That's not participation recognition. It's judged blind against all food and drink entries, meaning Holy Faith competed directly with full-strength competitors and came out exceptional.

The brewing approach prioritises retaining flavour, body, and mouthfeel. These aren't stripped-down shadows of proper beer. They're designed from the ground up to deliver the Northern Monk experience without alcohol.

The Refectory taproom in Holbeck pours sixteen lines including alcohol-free options, and brewery tours accommodate those not drinking. You can order direct from their website with free UK shipping on orders over fifty pounds.

Northern Monk represents what happens when a genuinely successful craft brewery takes alcohol-free seriously. Holy Faith isn't an afterthought or a marketing exercise. It's a beer that's earned its reputation on flavour alone.
