About This Drink
Schneider Weisse has been brewing in Bavaria since 1872, and the TAP3 Alkoholfrei has been in their range since 2002. It's made the way a Hefeweizen should be: open fermentation, non-filtered, pasteurised, then the alcohol gently removed. The brewery hasn't taken shortcuts on process, and it shows in the glass. It pours a deep, hazy chestnut with a generous off-white head. The aroma is led by sweet cereal wheat and bready malt, with ripe banana and clove sitting just underneath. On the palate, banana comes through in a greener, more restrained form than in the full-strength version, balanced by spicy clove and a soft malt sweetness. The carbonation is brisk but fine-bubbled rather than aggressive, giving a smooth and tingly texture. The finish is dry with a clean, gentle bitterness. It's one of the better alcohol-free wheat beers around. The yeast character comes through clearly, which isn't a given in dealcoholised versions of this style.
