Nanny State is one of the older entries in the AF beer canon. BrewDog brews it to low ABV using limited fermentation with five specialty malts including rye and wheat, then dry hops with Cascade, Simcoe, Amarillo, Columbus, Centennial, and Ahtanum. At 50 IBUs, it has more bitterness than most drinkers expect from something at this strength. The colour is amber with reddish hues. On the nose, citrus and floral hop character comes through with pine and orange peel, underpinned by caramel and toasted grain. The palate opens with a rich, almost plummy malt quality before bitterness and citrus take over on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and smooth for the ABV, which is partly down to the eight-malt grist. Vegan-friendly. Contains gluten.
