Cape Malt takes inspiration from both American bourbon and Scotch whisky traditions, using hydro-distillation to extract the character of peated malt, rye, corn, wheat, vanilla, and American oak, then weaving in rooibos. The rooibos is what makes it South African rather than a straight homage to either whisky tradition: it contributes an earthy, slightly herbal quality that sits alongside the more familiar whisky notes. The nose leads with mellow vanilla and caramel, with peated smoke in the background rather than up front. On the palate it has good body and a satisfying thickness, the rooibos adding a distinctive earthiness. The smoke is measured throughout. Drink neat over a large ice cube, or use it as the base of a spirit-free Old Fashioned with bitters and orange peel.
