Cape Citrus is produced through hydro-distillation, which is Abstinence's standard approach: it captures the flavour of each botanical individually before the final blend comes together. The citrus here is grapefruit, orange, and lemon in sequence, bright and clean. Buchu, a fynbos plant with a slightly earthy, blackcurrant-like edge, adds the indigenous character that makes it distinctly South African rather than a generic citrus gin alternative. Cassia bark, pepper, and fennel bring warmth and a dry aromatic quality underneath. The nose is vivid and immediately citrusy, grapefruit pith and fresh orange leading. The palate is clean, with the warm cassia spice grounding the fruit. The finish is dry and crisp, with a herbal note that lingers. Long with tonic over ice, with a grapefruit slice, is the obvious route.
