About This Drink
Conker is a Dorset distillery known for gin, and Bowser Leaf is their alcohol-free line. Rather than attempting a like-for-like gin substitute, they distilled five botanicals chosen for their green, herbal character: mint, tarragon, patchouli, thyme and basil. No alcohol is involved at any stage, with New Forest spring water used as the base. The result is genuinely distinctive. Mint comes through first on the nose, with tarragon adding an anise edge. On the palate, patchouli brings a woody, earthy base that stops the whole thing feeling too sweet or perfumey. Thyme contributes a dry savouriness, and basil rounds it off with a softer, fresher note. The finish is dry and holds on for a while, which is more than most alcohol-free spirits manage. It works best with tonic water and something citrussy or herby as a garnish. The herbaceous profile means it sits in a different lane to most AF gins, which tend to lean floral or citrus-forward. If that style bores you, this is worth trying.
