Road Runner is brewed with coffee beans from Quijote Kaffee, a specialty roaster based in Hamburg. The beans go directly into the brew rather than being added as flavouring, which comes through in the result: this tastes like coffee in a beer, not like a beer that smells of coffee. It pours very dark brown, close to black, with a caramel-coloured head that settles quickly. The aroma leads with roasted espresso and bittersweet dark chocolate, with a faint smokiness underneath. On the palate, caramel and roasted nut build first, then vanilla emerges mid-palate before a clean, slightly bitter finish where both the hops and the coffee make themselves known. At 0.4% ABV and 18mg caffeine per 100ml, it has some caffeine presence but nothing dramatic. A good evening drink if you want something dark and roasty without the alcohol.
