Espresso and kombucha is a less obvious pairing than most fruit combinations, but the logic holds: both have acidity and bitterness, and they layer rather than clash. The base is Equinox's organic green tea kombucha, with espresso coffee blended in. The coffee is dominant on the nose, roasted and slightly bitter. On the palate the espresso comes first, with the kombucha acidity surfacing mid-drink. The bitterness from both elements reinforces each other. The carbonation is light rather than aggressive, which suits the coffee character. At around 14 calories per 100ml it is considerably lighter than a standard iced coffee drink. Best served very cold. Works as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up if you want something carbonated and lower calorie than a canned coffee drink.
