About This Drink
La Trappe Epos sits alongside the better-known Nillis in the abbey's alcohol-free lineup, but it's a different kind of beer. Lighter in colour and body, it pours hazy gold with a foam head that holds up well. The flavour is more interesting than the pale appearance suggests. Soft malt sweetness comes first, followed by a spicy note that gives the beer some personality, and there's a faint sourness on the finish that lifts it rather than leaving it flat. Hop bitterness is present but restrained. It doesn't have the malt depth of the amber Nillis, but it's more approachable and easier to drink through. De Koningshoeven has been brewing at the abbey in Berkel-Enschot since 1884. Epos is a newer addition to the range, and at 24 kcal per 100ml it's one of the lightest Trappist beers around.
