Erdinger Alkoholfrei is a hefeweizen kept under 0.5% by controlling fermentation rather than stripping alcohol out after the fact. It pours hazy golden with a tall, creamy white head, and looks exactly as a Bavarian wheat beer should. Banana and clove come through on the nose, classic hefeweizen territory. The taste follows through: soft wheat malt up front, some caramel sweetness in the middle, then a mild bitterness from the aroma hops and a light fruity acidity that lifts the finish. The body is light to medium with smooth carbonation and a velvety texture. It also happens to be isotonic, which means it's absorbed more quickly than regular drinks, and it contains vitamins B12 and folic acid. That's why you see it marketed heavily at runners and cyclists. As wheat beers go, it's a reasonable example of the style. If you like hefeweizens, this does the job.
