Counter Culture
Counter Culture launched in January 2023 with a simple premise: non-alcoholic drinks in pubs and bars are often boring, sugary, or might as well be tap water. Co-founders Tom Smart and Harry McDowell set out to change that from their fermentary in Bedminster, Bristol.
The pair had a lightbulb moment during the pandemic. Stretches of enforced sobriety left them feeling refreshed, yet returning to normal life meant navigating a world where decent alcohol-free options remained thin on the ground. Rather than accept that reality, they started brewing.
Counter Culture makes sparkling kombucha sodas designed for grown-up drinking occasions. Their approach deliberately avoids the harsh, vinegary punch that puts many people off kombucha. Instead, they ferment organic green tea in small batches to create a base that's light and balanced, then layer in bold flavour combinations. Mango and Ginger brings tropical warmth with a spicy kick. Rhubarb and Hibiscus delivers tart, floral notes. Citrus Yuzu offers something bright and zesty. The range gives you genuine variety rather than slight variations on a theme.
The drinks clock in at around 20 calories per can with no added sweeteners. Everything is organic, vegan, and gluten-free. They're packaged in 330ml cans wrapped in striking artwork from local Bristol artists, designs that explore societal themes and provoke conversation rather than just looking pretty on a shelf.
What makes Counter Culture genuinely unusual is their business structure. They've donated 51% of their shares to non-profit organisations, with an ambition to raise over a million pounds for social and environmental causes as the company grows. They achieved B Corp certification and joined 1% for the Planet, putting their money where their mouth is on the ethics front. Their fermentary runs carbon neutral.
The brand earned recognition quickly. They picked up Great Taste Awards in 2025 and landed a partnership with Alcohol Change UK as the official kombucha of the Dry January campaign. For a company barely two years old, that's serious validation.
You'll find Counter Culture in independent shops, zero-proof bottle shops, and a growing number of bars and restaurants that take their soft drinks selection seriously. They also sell direct from their website and offer wholesale for hospitality venues. Bristol remains their heartland, but distribution is spreading.
Fermented soft drinks are still a niche corner of the alcohol-free market, but Counter Culture are one of the more coherent operators in that space. The product is interesting, the ethics are backed by actual structure, and the Bristol base gives them a credible independent story.
