Cognato
Cognato began in 2018 when cousins David Sommestad and Adam Malmnäs found themselves in a familiar predicament. As parents ferrying children to weekend activities, enjoying wine with lunch was off the table. Rather than settle for sugary grape juice or watered-down alternatives, they decided to create something better.
The name means 'closely related to' in Italian, a nod to both their family bond and the wines themselves. These are meant to sit comfortably alongside their alcoholic counterparts, not apologise for existing.
Cognato sources grapes from South Africa's Western Cape, a region with genuine wine-making pedigree. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from low-yielding coastal vineyards, while the Chenin Blanc showcases a grape variety South Africa has made its own. A rosé and sparkling round out the range, giving the lineup enough breadth for most occasions.
The dealcoholisation uses vacuum spinning cone technology, which strips out alcohol at low temperatures. This gentler approach preserves more of the aromatic compounds that make wine interesting. The results land on the drier side of the alcohol-free wine spectrum, steering clear of the cloying sweetness that plagues many competitors.
Fairtrade certification arrived in 2020, adding an ethical dimension to the quality focus. The growers receive fair prices and working conditions, which matters when your entire business depends on the integrity of your supply chain.
In the UK, The Alcohol Free Company handles distribution. You'll also find Cognato on Amazon and through specialist alcohol-free retailers like Dry Drinker and Wise Bartender. The range sits at the more serious end of alcohol-free wine, priced accordingly.
