Pohjala
Põhjala started in 2011 as a gypsy brewery, creating recipes and brewing at other facilities around Tallinn. The name means 'northern realm' in Estonian, and the brewery has since grown into the largest craft operation in the Baltic states.
The modern facility in Noblessner harbour opened in 2018, featuring a brewery, taproom, lab, shop, and even a sauna. That last detail captures something of the Estonian approach: serious about beer, but not too serious about themselves.
Põhjala earned a place on Ratebeer's top 100 world breweries list, one of very few Baltic breweries to reach that kind of international recognition. Their reputation rests particularly on porters and barrel-aged specialties, drawing on ingredients foraged from Estonian forests to create distinctive character.
Virmalised, their India pale ale, accounts for over a quarter of production and serves as the accessible entry point to the range. The brewery's heart lies in darker, more contemplative beers that reward patience and attention.
The alcohol-free range extends that philosophy. An AF IPA delivers hop character without the alcohol, letting drinkers experience Põhjala's approach to brewing without the morning-after consideration.
International shipping remains limited due to taxation complexities, but UK specialist retailers stock Põhjala for those curious about Baltic craft brewing. A brewery worth seeking out if you haven't already.
