Force Majeure
Force Majeure emerged from a Belgian triathlete's frustration with the alcohol-free beer market. Stijn Panis was deep into training in 2017 when he realised his options for decent AF beer were limited to uninspiring lagers. Belgium, a country with one of the world's richest brewing traditions, had somehow overlooked alcohol-free specialty beers. He set out to fix that.
Launched in 2019, Force Majeure bills itself as Belgium's first dedicated alcohol-free brewery. Panis develops recipes using his own brewing kit before partnering with an established Belgian brewery for production. The approach lets him focus on recipe development while ensuring proper Belgian brewing credentials.
The range tackles classic Belgian styles that most AF brewers avoid. Their Traditional Blond balances hop bitterness with a fresh, clean finish. The Bruin delivers caramel and roasted malt notes typical of Belgian dark ales. For those who like their beer with backbone, the Tripel and Tripel Hop offer spicy, complex flavours that hold up to scrutiny. A Kriek rounds out the lineup with the fruity, tart character expected from the style.
What makes Force Majeure notable is the ambition. Rather than playing it safe with simple lagers, they've gone straight for the styles that define Belgian brewing. These are beers worth taking seriously, judged on their own terms rather than against lowered expectations.
UK drinkers can find Force Majeure through specialist online retailers like Dry Drinker and Non-Alcoholic Shop. The brand also ships direct from Belgium.
