The person charged with creating Atopia was Lesley Gracie, the master distiller who had already spent decades crafting Hendrick's distinctive cucumber and rose character. Her approach to low-alcohol spirits follows a similar philosophy to her gin work: layer natural botanicals through careful distillation rather than simply diluting existing recipes. The production process takes around six weeks from distillation through botanical extraction to final blending.

The range comprises three botanical spirits, each at 0.5% ABV. Spiced Citrus leads with orange and warm spice notes, designed to work with Indian tonic. Rhubarb & Ginger balances sharp fruit tartness against gentle heat. Hedgerow Berries takes a different direction, combining a compote of berries with rosehip and subtle spice. All three aim for the kind of complexity you would expect from a proper spirits producer, not the one-note sweetness that plagued early alcohol-free attempts.

Atopia matters because it signalled that major distillers were taking the category seriously. When a company with William Grant's heritage launches a dedicated AF brand with their top distiller at the helm, it lends credibility to the whole sector. The spirits have picked up recognition at drinks competitions, including awards at the World Alcohol Free Awards.
