About This Drink
Zweigelt is Austria's most widely planted red grape, and the version Zeronimo uses comes from old Burgenland vineyards chosen specifically for mineral complexity and concentration. After vinification the wine spent 15 months in small oak barriques, picking up vanilla, wood spice and nougat before Zeronimo's vacuum distillation process stripped the alcohol. The aroma recovery stage, which reintroduces volatile compounds lost during dealcoholisation, is what keeps the oak integration from falling apart. The nose is nutty and fruit-forward: ripe cherry, a hint of eucalyptus and an interesting peppery note that adds intrigue. The palate is dry and structured, with blackberry and leather at the core, cocoa and soft spice layered through the mid-palate, and tannins that are approachable but present. It has genuine body for an alcohol-free red, more than most in the category manage. The finish is dry and sustained, with tart fruit and integrated oak spice that lingers without becoming bitter. If you want an alcohol-free red that behaves like a red wine should at the table, this is a serious attempt at it.
