Tannat is a grape variety native to Gascony and the Basque Country, known for firm tannins and dark fruit intensity. Blended with Merlot's softer, rounder character, Moderato is aiming for balance rather than simply making something drinkable. The alcohol comes out via cold distillation with aroma reintegration, which tries to put back some of what the evaporation process strips away. In the glass it is a deep garnet with violet edges. The nose gives you blackberry, plum, and vanilla with some spice underneath. The tannins are velvety rather than grippy. The finish is balanced and does not drop off a cliff the way some alcohol-free reds do. It is one of the more considered options in the category. Not a replacement for a glass of Malbec, but a red wine that can hold its own at the table.
