About This Drink
Paulaner has been making this since 1987 and it remains one of the more convincing AF wheat beers around. The production method follows traditional Bavarian fermentation before dealcoholisation, which gives it more to work with than beers brewed to low ABV from the start. Pours a hazy golden amber with a full creamy head. The nose is unmistakably hefeweizen: ripe banana, clove, and a soft biscuity malt underneath. On the palate it's smooth and gently full-bodied by AF standards, with those fruity esters and yeast spice carrying through. The finish is mild and slightly sweet. Serve in a tall weizen glass, tipping the yeast sediment in at the end. Sits under 0.5% ABV rather than 0.0%, so not the right choice if that distinction matters to you. If it doesn't, it's one of the best versions of the style available.
