The radler format is a simple idea: mix beer with lemonade, cut the strength, increase the refreshment. Amstel's 0.0% version removes the alcohol from the equation entirely, combining their AF lager base with citrus juice concentrate from lemon, orange, lime and acerola. It pours a hazy pale gold with lively carbonation. Lemon leads throughout: fresh and tart on the nose, bright and slightly sweet on the palate, with a clean citrusy finish. The grain character from the malt base is present but quiet. The tartness keeps the sweetness in check, which stops it tipping into cloying territory. For what it is, it works well. If you want something lighter and more fruit-forward than a straight AF lager, this hits the mark.
Ingredients
Carbonated water, barley malt, sugar, fruit juice from concentrate (lemon juice 2.7%, orange juice, lime juice, acerola juice), hops, hop extract, natural flavours, concentrated lemon extract, stabiliser: locust bean gum
