Crodino started in the Alpine town of Crodo in Piedmont in 1965, and the formula has stayed much the same ever since. Gruppo Campari has owned it since 1995, but it sits apart from the rest of the Campari portfolio as a genuinely 0% product rather than a dealcoholised one. The botanicals are infused for around six months before blending, which gives the liquid more complexity than you might expect from something served in a small bottle. It pours a warm amber-orange and throws a surprisingly persistent white foam head. Quinine leads on the palate, bringing genuine bitterness, then citrus and a trace of vanilla soften things out. Nutmeg, coriander and cardamom come through in the background, with a dry herbal finish that lingers. Carbonation keeps it bright rather than sweet. Served over ice in a tumbler with a slice of orange, it does exactly what a pre-dinner aperitif should: it sharpens the appetite without filling you up. Works well alongside olives and cured meats, and pairs naturally with the pace of an Italian pre-dinner hour.
