Giffard's Spritz Alcohol Free uses grapefruit zest macerated in white wine vinegar, lifted with gentian extract. Gentian is a bitter plant root with a distinctly medicinal quality that's central to most classic aperitivi, and its presence here gives the drink more structure than the average alcohol-free spritz alternative. The nose opens on fresh citrus backed by herbal depth from the gentian. On the palate there's a lively contrast: grapefruit sweetness and acidity play against a finish that turns noticeably bitter. It doesn't try to disguise the bitterness, which is the right call for this category. The sweetness is relatively high, so it works best lengthened with plenty of sparkling water and ice. Poured over ice with a slice of orange it reads convincingly as an aperitivo occasion drink.
