Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz is made from South Australian fruit and dealcoholised using low-temperature vacuum distillation, a process that tends to preserve more of the wine's aromatic character than harsher methods. On the nose it's dark and spiced: plum, dark berry, white pepper and a hint of exotic oak spice. The palate follows through with cherry and red berry upfront, darker fruit in the mid-palate, and a dry, tannic finish with some textural grip. The chalky tannin structure is one of the more interesting things about it; it gives the wine something to hold onto rather than just sitting flat. At 0.5% ABV it's about as close as dealcoholised red wine currently gets to behaving like the real thing. Worth trying if you've written off alcohol-free red wine on previous attempts.
