About This Drink
Wonderspritz comes from Rheinland Distillers in Bonn, the team behind Wonderleaf and Wonderazul. It is a non-alcoholic aperitif concentrate built on orange peel, gentian root and herbal extracts, pitched squarely at the Aperol Spritz crowd. The liquid is a vivid orange-red in the glass. The aroma is immediate: candied orange peel, a faint earthiness from the gentian, a herbal note underneath. It drinks fruity and bitter in the right proportion, with the gentian providing enough edge to stop it reading as a soft drink. The bitter-orange note hangs around in the finish longer than you might expect given the sugar content. It is a concentrate and needs diluting. The recommended build is two parts Wonderspritz to three parts alcohol-free sparkling wine with a splash of soda, served over ice with an orange slice. That ratio works. Neat it is cloying. Get the proportions right and it reads as a convincing spritz.
