Merlot
Dealcoholised Merlot from Reh Kendermann in Germany, with soft red berry fruit, very little tannin, and a touch of sweetness from added sugar.
About This Drink
Reh Kendermann, based in Bingen, produce this as part of their Studio Zero range. The base wine is predominantly Merlot, dealcoholised and then rounded out with invert sugar syrup and natural flavourings. It's a common approach in budget AF wine production and it shows in the result. In the glass it's a decent-looking deep ruby. The nose is simple: ripe plum and a bit of blackberry, with the faint sulphite note you get in most dealcoholised reds. On the palate you get soft fruit and a slight sweetness from the added sugar, but very little of the tannin structure you'd associate with Merlot. It drinks closer to a light grape juice than a conventional red, though the varietal character does come through in the fruit weight. Finish is short. At 21 calories per 100ml it's one of the lighter AF reds around. Best served slightly below room temperature. Serviceable rather than exciting, but it does the job at the budget end of the market.
