Weihenstephan sits on a hill in Bavaria and has been brewing since 1040, which gives the brewery bragging rights as the oldest in the world. The Non-alcoholic Original Helles is their take on the region's classic pale lager style, and they treat it with the same seriousness as the alcoholic version: full fermentation and maturation, then alcohol removal via a proprietary low-intervention process. In the glass it's a clean bright gold with a fine white head. The nose is what you expect from a Helles done properly: floral and faintly spicy German hops, a hint of biscuit underneath. On the palate there's a gentle malt sweetness balanced by restrained bitterness, and it finishes dry and crisp. Light-bodied with fine carbonation. At 13 kcal per 100ml it's about as low-calorie as a beer gets without tasting watered down. If you like your lager clean and uncomplicated, this does the job well. It's the kind of AF beer that won't distract you with anything unusual.
