About This Drink

The process here is genuinely different from most alcohol-free lagers. Rather than brewing a full-strength beer and then removing the alcohol afterwards, Estrella Galicia stops the fermentation early. The yeast works on the wort for around 12 hours, building flavour before the process is halted. The result is a beer that never had much alcohol to begin with, rather than one that had it taken out. In the glass it pours a clean, bright golden. There is malt and cereal on the nose with a light floral note from the hops. On the palate it is fairly straightforward: a touch of malt sweetness up front, some hop bitterness in the middle, and a clean, dry finish. The body is on the lighter side. It does what a lager should do without any off-notes or the thin, watery quality that undercuts a lot of alcohol-free lagers.
