Doppio Passo
Doppio Passo built its reputation on Primitivo, the sun-soaked red grape from Puglia that shares DNA with California's Zinfandel. The brand started as a family business near Venice in 1928, founded by Maria and Carlo Botter. Nearly a century later, it has grown into one of Italy's most widely distributed wine labels, now backed by a joint venture between Italian wine group Argea and German drinks giant Rotkäppchen-Mumm.
The name refers to the double harvest technique used for their flagship red. Grapes are picked at two different ripeness levels and fermented separately, creating that soft, fruit-forward style that made Doppio Passo a supermarket fixture across the continent. Beyond Primitivo, the range includes Prosecco, Grillo from Sicily, and a sweet Moscato.
Their alcohol-free collection launched under the "Alternativa" banner. Three options cover the basics: a red built around dark berry flavours, a tropical-leaning white, and a sparkling version for celebrations. The dealcoholisation process aims to preserve the fruity character of the original wines rather than stripping them back to something thin and forgettable.
Wide distribution means you can find Alternativa in major supermarkets and online wine retailers across the UK and Europe. Not a craft producer pushing boundaries, but a reliable option when you want something that looks and feels like proper wine without the alcohol.
