Ambar
Spain's oldest brewery has a surprisingly strong claim to alcohol-free history. La Zaragozana, the Zaragoza-based company behind Ambar, released Spain's first non-alcoholic beer back in 1976. That beer, originally called Ambar Sin, predates most of the current AF movement by decades.
Founded in 1900 by a group of investors led by a German master brewer, La Zaragozana has operated from the same site in Zaragoza's historic San José neighbourhood for over a century. They still use their own malting facility and maintain the only open vat fermentation room still operating in Spain. The brewery remains independent and family-owned, a rarity in an industry dominated by global conglomerates.
Ambar's alcohol-free range reflects their pioneering spirit. The original 0.0 lager evolved from that 1976 release, now brewed with palatinose for a cleaner energy release. More impressively, in 2011 they created what they claim was the world's first gluten-free alcohol-free beer. The Triple Zero Sin Gluten guarantees less than 6 parts per million of gluten, opening up the category to coeliac drinkers who previously had no options.
The Triple Zero name has expanded meaning now: zero alcohol, zero sugar, and zero carbon emissions in production. It's a marketing angle, sure, but one that reflects genuine investment in sustainable brewing practices.
In the UK, Ambar 0.0 appears in specialist AF retailers and some larger supermarkets. It's positioned as a premium Spanish import rather than a mass-market option. The beer itself delivers clean lager character with a touch more sweetness than you might expect from the style, a deliberate choice that works well for the intended audience.
For a brewery with 18 different beer varieties in their portfolio, the alcohol-free range remains a point of pride rather than an afterthought. They were doing this before it was fashionable, and that heritage shows in the attention they give these products.
