Theo Freyne started homebrewing, got obsessed with American craft beer, and decided Cheltenham needed a proper destination brewery. He earned a Masters in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot-Watt, did stints at Colorado's Odell Brewing and the Cotswold Brewery, then launched Deya in 2015.

The brewery made its name with hazy, hop-forward pales and IPAs. Steady Rolling Man, their flagship pale ale, was rated the best in the UK on Untappd within a year of opening. That kind of recognition from a brand new Gloucestershire brewery turned heads across the craft scene.

Deya operates from a 25,000 square foot unit in Cheltenham with an on-site taproom that draws locals and beer tourists alike. The taproom model was central to Freyne's vision from the start. When Deya opened, nobody in the local market was doing keg beer, cans, and a proper taproom experience. They changed that.

Their approach leans heavily on American influence. Soft, juicy, aggressively hopped beers served in distinctive 500ml cans. Everything stays unfiltered and unpasteurised to keep maximum flavour intact. The brewery has grown but maintained its quality focus, sourcing ingredients carefully and keeping sustainability practices central to operations.

On the alcohol-free front, Deya offers Spoken Into Existence and Eye For Symmetry, both low-alcohol pale ales at 0.5% ABV. These apply the same hazy, hop-forward philosophy to near-zero alcohol. Spoken Into Existence uses Citra, Motueka, and Nelson Sauvin hops for tropical mango, grapefruit, and white grape notes. It's rated 3.7 on Untappd, which is solid territory for the category.

Deya's low-ABV brewing reflects their taproom culture. They want people to stay, enjoy themselves, and not get hammered. Making genuinely good session and low-alcohol options supports that atmosphere of conviviality they're after.

You'll find Deya at specialist craft beer retailers and bottle shops across the UK, or direct from their website with free shipping over sixty quid. The taproom in Cheltenham remains the best way to try their freshest offerings.
