Cabernet Sauvignon

Dealcoholised red wine from Spanish Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, produced by Reh Kendermann for the Waitrose own-label range.

About This Drink

The grapes are fully fermented before alcohol is removed via low-temperature vacuum distillation. A small amount of invert sugar syrup and flavouring is added to round out the profile, which means it's technically classed as an aromatised drink rather than a traditional wine. In the glass it's a mid ruby, light-bodied with barely present tannins. Raspberry and plum come through on the palate, with soft fruit sweetness and a gentle dark cherry note underneath. The finish is short and clean, fading with a slight sugary edge. At 22 calories per 100ml, the body is minimal. It's a straightforward, undemanding option for occasions when you want something red in the glass. Won't trouble anyone who's tasted the real thing, but it does the job.
