Belgium

Leffe traces its roots to 1240, when Norbertine monks at the Notre-Dame de Leffe abbey in Belgium's Namur province began brewing. The reason was practical: a plague had contaminated local water supplies, and beer's brewing process made it safer to drink. That utilitarian start eventually produced one of Belgium's most recognised abbey beer brands.

The abbey's brewing history hasn't been continuous. Floods, fires, and the French Revolution all disrupted production over the centuries. The brewery was confiscated by the state in 1796 and closed entirely by 1809. It wasn't until 1952 that Father Abbot Nys partnered with brewer Albert Lootvoet to revive the tradition, though production moved outside the abbey walls. That partnership means Leffe can't claim Trappist status, but the abbey still receives royalties from every bottle sold.

Today Leffe sits within the AB InBev portfolio, brewed at scale in Leuven at the Stella Artois brewery. The range spans several Belgian styles: the flagship Blonde, darker Brune, amber-hued Ambrée, and stronger options like Triple and Rituel 9°.

The alcohol-free lineup launched in 2020 with Leffe Blonde 0.0%, followed by Ruby 0.0%. The Blonde version keeps the signature malty sweetness and those characteristic vanilla and clove notes that define the original. Ruby 0.0% takes a different path, lighter and fruitier with raspberry and strawberry flavours balanced by subtle spice. Both clock in at true 0.0% ABV.

Leffe's alcohol-free offerings benefit from the brand's mainstream presence. You'll find them in major supermarkets across the UK and Europe. The brand leans heavily into food pairing, suggesting matches from abbey cheese to crème brûlée.

The 0.0% versions aren't trying to reinvent anything. If you know the distinctive Belgian character of the original, the AF range should feel familiar. That recognition is exactly the point.
