Clausthaler
Clausthaler holds a unique place in beer history. Launched in 1979 by Binding-Brauerei in Frankfurt, it was the world's first commercially successful alcohol-free beer. More than four decades later, it remains dedicated exclusively to the category it created.
The brand's origin story involves a clever bit of marketing. During development in the 1970s, the team faced scepticism from retailers who doubted anyone would buy alcohol-free beer. Their solution was to introduce it as "Prinzenbier", a light, refreshing option, before revealing its alcohol-free nature. By the time the truth came out, drinkers had already decided they liked it.
What makes Clausthaler technically interesting is its brewing approach. Rather than removing alcohol after fermentation, they developed a controlled fermentation process that limits alcohol production from the start. The wort contains minimal fermentable maltose, so the yeast simply cannot produce significant alcohol. This method, developed in 1973, predates most modern dealcoholisation techniques and still adheres to the German Reinheitsgebot purity law.
The range today includes their flagship Original, a clean German lager with mild bitterness and a slightly sweet finish. The Dry Hopped variant adds American hop character, citrus and pine notes that give it more contemporary appeal. Fruit-flavoured options include Lemon and Grapefruit radlers for those wanting something lighter. More recently, they've added an IPA and an isotonic 0.0 variant aimed at sports recovery.
Clausthaler sits in an interesting competitive position. In Germany, it dominated the alcohol-free market through the 1980s, at one point holding over half of all sales. That dominance has faded as craft breweries and major brands have piled into the category, but Clausthaler's heritage gives it credibility that newcomers cannot match.
The brand now sits within the Radeberger Gruppe, Germany's largest brewery conglomerate and part of the Dr. Oetker empire. This corporate backing ensures wide distribution. You'll find Clausthaler in supermarkets across the UK, Europe, and North America. It exports to more than fifty countries, making it one of the most globally available alcohol-free beers.
Clausthaler Original is a traditional German lager done straight: clean, balanced, unpretentious. It won't excite craft beer enthusiasts chasing hop bombs or barrel-aged experiments, but that's not the point. This is a beer for people who want something refreshing and familiar without the alcohol.
Pricing sits in the mid-range, neither competing with budget supermarket options nor reaching for premium positioning. You're paying for consistency and quality control from a brewery that's been perfecting this single category for nearly fifty years. As a category pioneer, it still has a stronger claim to the label "original" than most.
