Nogne
Nøgne Ø means Naked Isle in Norwegian, named after the barren rocky islets dotting the country's southern coast. Poet Ivar Aasen coined the term; Henrik Ibsen used it in his epic poem Terje Vigen. Founders Gunnar Wiig and Kjetil Jikiun launched the brewery in Grimstad in 2002, drawing on that stark coastal imagery.
The brewery grew quickly through the 2000s, building a reputation for bold, complex beers exported across dozens of markets. RateBeer has consistently ranked them among the world's best craft breweries. Hansa Borg Bryggerier acquired a majority share in 2013, providing resources for further expansion.
Their alcohol-free range reflects genuine commitment to the category. Norwegians have developed a growing taste for non-alcoholic beer, defined there as anything under 0.7% ABV, and Nøgne Ø has responded accordingly.
Svart/Hvit, meaning Black/White, is their standout: a non-alcoholic milk stout with coffee, vanilla, and chocolate notes. It's become a favourite among AF beer enthusiasts, proving that dark, complex beers don't need alcohol to satisfy. Stripped Craft Lime Ale takes a lighter path with refreshing citrus character. Julefri offers a non-alcoholic Christmas beer with festive spicing for the holiday season.
You'll find Nøgne Ø's alcohol-free beers through UK specialists like Dry Drinker and Wise Bartender. The range is compact but well-chosen, and Svart/Hvit in particular is worth seeking out.
