Meteor
Brasserie Meteor has brewed beer in Hochfelden, Alsace since 1640, making it the oldest brewing site in France still in operation. The Haag family has run the brewery for eight generations, with Michel Haag at the helm since 1975 and his son Edouard joining in 2014. Today it stands as France's largest family-owned independent brewery.
The location matters. Alsace sits on the Franco-German border, a region where brewing traditions run deep. Meteor draws water from the Vosges mountains, sources malt from France's best barley regions in Brie, Beauce, and Gâtinais, and uses hops grown locally alongside Czech Saaz. The result is beer with genuine regional character.
Their alcohol-free range applies the same standards. Meteor Sans Alcool is a blonde lager with a golden pour, light foam, and subtle honey notes balanced by a gentle bitterness. The Meteor IPA 0.0 takes a different direction with citrus aromatics and pronounced hop character while sitting at true 0.0% ABV. Both reflect proper French brewing rather than the thin, watery approximations that give the category a bad name.
The brewery has invested in modern dealcoholisation while keeping traditional techniques where they matter. Small batch production, quality ingredients, family oversight. It's an approach that European heritage brewers do well when they commit to the alcohol-free space.
In the UK, Meteor comes through specialist retailers including Beers of Europe and Dry Drinker. The IPA 0.0 has started appearing in broader AF selections. A brewery with four centuries of history behind it is an unusual thing to find in the alcohol-free aisle.
