Black Isle
Black Isle Brewery has been making organic beer in the Scottish Highlands since 1998. Founded by David Gladwin near Munlochy, the brewery sits on a 130-acre organic farm north of Inverness. The name comes from the Black Isle peninsula where they're based, though calling it an isle is a bit misleading since it's firmly attached to the mainland.
Organic brewing runs through everything Black Isle does. They source ingredients that cost up to three times more than conventional alternatives because they believe in doing things properly. The farm surrounding the brewery has seen over 7,000 native trees planted, hedgerows restored, and wetlands created. This commitment earned them B Corp certification, putting them among a small group of UK breweries meeting rigorous social and environmental standards.
Their alcohol-free range goes by the name Halo. The lineup includes an organic IPA, a lager, and an oat stout, all brewed to 0.3% ABV. The IPA brings tropical fruit character with citrus aromatics. The lager keeps things crisp and refreshing. The stout delivers dark chocolate and roasted coffee notes. All three maintain the organic credentials that define the wider Black Isle range.
Beyond brewing, the company runs craft beer and pizza bars in Inverness and Fort William. Much of the food comes from their own farm, creating a proper farm-to-glass-to-plate operation that few breweries can match.
Halo beers are available direct from Black Isle's website and through various retailers. A niche range from a genuinely committed brewery, though availability outside Scotland can be patchy.
