Two mates meet at a stag do, discover a shared obsession with craft beer, and decide to build a brewery. That's the Brew York origin story, and since 2016 founders Wayne Smith and Lee Grabham have turned that pub conversation into one of Yorkshire's most respected craft operations.

Based in York with two production sites, Brew York runs a ten-barrel showcase brewery within the city's historic walls and a larger 50-hectolitre facility in Osbaldwick for main production. They've expanded into seven venues across Yorkshire, from their original Walmgate taproom and beer hall to pubs in Pocklington, Otley, and Knaresborough. The Walmgate Beer Hall alone boasts 40 taps, making it York's largest selection.

Their brewing philosophy is straightforward: make beers they'd want to drink themselves. That approach produces everything from hazy IPAs to pastry stouts to fruited sours, with around 20 different fresh beers rotating through at any time. Tonkoko, their milk stout infused with coconut, vanilla, and tonka beans, has become something of a cult classic.

For alcohol-free drinkers, Brew York offers Loris, a 0.5% hazy pale ale. Brewed with El Dorado, Citra, and Mosaic hops, it delivers tropical and citrus fruit aromas with a crisp, refreshing finish. It's vegan-friendly and priced competitively at under three quid a can. While their AF range is limited to this single beer, Loris shows they can apply their craft brewing skills to the low-alcohol space.

You can grab Loris direct from their website, at any of their Yorkshire venues, or through various online craft beer retailers. For York locals or visitors, the taproom experience is worth the trip, where you can try Loris alongside their full range and see the brewing kit up close.
